Wildfire Mitigation That Actually Helps Your Insurance

June 12, 2026 · WeProtect Insurance

If you own a home in Colorado’s foothills or mountains, wildfire mitigation is no longer just about protecting the house. It is about keeping the house insurable. Here is what actually moves the needle with carriers, based on what underwriters look at.

How carriers see your home

Before a human reads your application, a wildfire risk score has usually already decided which carriers will consider you. The score weighs vegetation, slope, access, and community factors. You cannot move the mountain, but several of the inputs respond to work you can do, and several carriers now explicitly credit documented mitigation.

The work that counts most

The first five feet. The zone immediately around your foundation matters most: noncombustible ground cover instead of mulch against the siding, no shrubs under windows, nothing flammable under decks. Ember ignition at the structure is how most homes are actually lost.

The roof. A Class A fire-rated roof is the single biggest structural factor. If your roof is due for replacement anyway, choosing Class A materials does double duty for hail and fire.

Ember entry points. Ember-resistant vents, screened soffits and gutters, and sealed gaps deny embers the openings they exploit.

Defensible space zones. Thinned and limbed trees from 5 to 30 feet, spacing between crowns, ladder fuels removed. Keep it maintained; one season of growth undoes the credit.

Community programs. Firewise USA recognition for your neighborhood genuinely matters to several carriers, and some offer explicit discounts for it.

Document everything

Underwriters credit what they can verify. Photograph before and after, keep receipts and contractor invoices, and save your Firewise certificate or community assessment. When we submit a high fire-risk home to carriers, that documentation file is often the difference between a declination and an offer.

Mitigation opens doors, placement strategy walks through them

Even well-mitigated homes sometimes need specialty markets in today’s environment. We run a carrier escalation path for fire-exposed homes: standard markets first, mitigation credits applied, specialty markets where scores demand it, and Colorado’s FAIR Plan only as a true last resort. Read more on our wildfire home insurance page or request a placement review with your mitigation file and we will go to work.
