Colorado Plumber Insurance
Plumbing claims are water claims, and water finds everything. From service-and-repair shops to new-construction crews, we insure Colorado plumbers with programs built around the trade's real exposure: the damage that shows up after the job is done.
The plumber's insurance program
A failed fitting can ruin three floors of finishes months after your invoice was paid. That is why completed operations coverage, not just premises coverage, is the heart of plumber GL.
- General liability with strong completed operations limits and no surprise water damage sublimits.
- Workers' compensation for crews, with classifications that separate service work from new construction correctly. See our workers' comp page.
- Commercial auto for service vans running all day, every day.
- Inland marine for cameras, jetters, press tools, and the expensive kit that lives in your vans.
- Bonds where municipalities require them for permits.
Service vs construction mix
Drain cleaning and fixture swaps rate differently than ground-up rough-in work. An accurate revenue split gets you a fairer rate than a generic plumbing classification.
Water mitigation relationships
When a callback turns into a flooded kitchen, fast mitigation shrinks the claim. We talk through claim response with our plumbing clients so small losses stay small.
Gas lines, boilers, medical gas
Specialty work needs to be declared and rated. It is almost always insurable, but only if it is on the policy before the loss.
Plumber insurance FAQs
Does GL cover redoing my own faulty work?
No. GL covers the resulting damage, like the flooring destroyed by the leak, not the cost to redo the repipe itself. That distinction shapes how you warranty your work and price your jobs.
What limits do GCs require from plumbing subs?
Typically $1M per occurrence with additional insured status and a waiver of subrogation, sometimes $2M aggregate per project. Send us the subcontract and we will match the certificate to it exactly.
I am a master plumber going out on my own. What does day one look like?
general liability at $1M, a commercial auto policy on the van, inland marine on your tools, and comp if you hire. New-venture plumbing is very placeable and we will structure it to grow with you.
Does plumber insurance cover sewer line and excavation work?
When declared and rated, yes. Excavation adds underground utility exposure that must be on the policy, and documented 811 locate practices keep both claims and premiums down.
Am I covered for water mitigation work I perform after my own callback?
Mitigation you perform on your own job is generally part of managing the loss, but bill-the-carrier restoration work as a service line needs to be declared. Tell us everything the trucks do.

Water damage claims escalate fast in finished homes, so $1M per occurrence is the floor and many GC contracts now push total limits to $2M via umbrella. We match the limit to your contracts and the homes you work in.
Do gas line repairs change my insurance?
Yes, gas work carries explosion exposure and must be declared. It is insurable at fair rates with the right markets, and undeclared gas work is a denial risk on the trade's most serious possible claim.
